For anime to become mainstream

Postby mguy28 on Mon Feb 16, 2009 4:44 am

While Anime has become more and more popular, I doubt anyone would argue that it has truly vaulted into the Mainstream of American popular culture.Tomorrow, the Sci-fi channel will begin to show Anime in its Monday block, making the number of channels showing at least some Anime on a non-anime dedicate channel 3, along with Cartoon Network and G4 Tech TV(If there are more, please tell me).In addition, there are no less than 2 24/7 channels dedicated to Anime(The Anime Network, and the Funimation Channel, again, that I know of)So what will it take for Anime to become "Mainstream"? In my opinion...For Anime to become mainstream, it will have to appear on an "Adult oriented network" (like USA or TBS or Scifi or whatever) in a Prime-time spot (Between 7 and 10 PM) and be successful (Get picked up for at least 1 more season, without being moved from a prime-time slot)

But I don't think that that will ever happen really. I mean, those are for sitcoms and primetime shows. Anime could be that, but most of the American population doesn't know what anime is about or even heard of it. I would love to see anime on regular channels other than Cartoon Network, but I honestly don't see that happening. Maybe with all these new digital channels, but I still doubt that.

I think the problem is that people see Anime as being childish before they even understand what any of it is about. That is at least what I have noticed about the people around me. I have 3 friends who enjoy anime aside from myself and everyone else I know sees anime as something they would watch when they were little because it is animated. No one really gives it a shot. I don`t think it will ever be considered mainstream, and to be honest that doesn`t bother me at all. I like having a different hobby than everyone else ^^

Also, the 2 current anime channels aren`t even available in Canada. And we don`t have a dedicated anime channel. It`s rather sad.

Funimation channel kinda died. Anime NEtwork is a pay-to-watch now. I think. The movies and whole volumes are on Comcast. But the singular episodes are free as for as I know though, although they say with subscription. They just confuse you @_@

I mostly just watch it online now. Why wait for it to come on TV when I can just go on the computer?

Lawl. Agree. But sometimes they have something I never heard of on there xD But they should get more available anime channels. And not have to pay more for them. Hense the "call and ask your cable provider to add this channel to their channel list" commercials.
