Usually not because they don't have the novelty factor. A great example is Ghostbusters. The sequel had better craftmanship, but the idea wasn't as novel and as a result the movie was not as entertaining or successful.

It can happen, though. The classic example of a sequel being superior would be Empire Strikes Back. I think a lot of that is because an extended story had been formulated by George Lucas before any of the films were made. Instead of deciding that the first movie was successful and trying to come up with another movie that would be its equal, he knew what Empire was going to be about all along.

A good sequil comeback has to be Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. It had more suspense, it had funnier moments, and it was my first Pirates of the Caribbean movie to own on DVD (Lol) Razz

The best sequils I think are Underworld: Evolution and Terminator 2. They are even better then the original movies.

Ooh, definitely Terminator 2 surpassed the original. The budget and special effects were part of it, but the biggest reason it was so much better is because it took familiar elements from the first movie and stood them on end. Now Arnold is a protector. Now Sara Conner is a militant survivor. It introduced new elements to the story.

I agree with you. T2 is definitely better than the original.
