| To start with, the movie was actually quite good except for some parts where its kind of a little much impossible and not so brilliant. Anyway the whole movie is down right good and pretty much in depth however there is only one problem... I already saw a movie having the same plot with the departed about a year ago, maybe it was older than when i actually saw it and i cant help but think that they just coppied it, i mean litteraly, most of the scenes where the same. Anyway the movie that i was able to watch before watching THE DEPARTED was entitled INTERNAL AFFAIRS, it was a chinesse made movie, maybe hongkong movie because its quite westernized. The thing is the plot was the same the whole story line was the same even some of the dialouges of the characters were thesame.. What im saying is, Can hollywood actually do this??? I mean COPY A MOVIE then change some details a bit, put up a new cast, more popular ones, then call it there own.. Gee, isnt it kind of commiting forgery??? I HOPE THEY do something about this, i was really upset when i saw the move THE DEPARTED knowing its concept was not original and all.. just want to know what you people think, and of course im trying to make people be aware such forgery, if it is one.. |

i agree with you. but departed definitely took steps to flesh out the story line of IA (which was an excellent film.) IA left a lot of gaps, which is fine by me, since I grew up watching Cantonese films, and am sort of used to it. For American viewers, though, The Departed might be a more satisfying (not necessarily better) flick.
I saw this article that did compared the two...

| If any of you watched the Oscars, The Departed won best adaptation of Infernal Affairs. It wasn't just copied. It is like making a movie from a book. |

Helpful tip: Anytime you give info that could give away part of the ending or storyline, always mark the top of your post with a spoiler alert. I've already seen it so it doesn't bother me, but for others who may have not seen it yet and read this topic, they've now been told about part of the ending. So just use this as a caution anytime you want to go into detail about a film, esp ones that have such great plot twists.
FYI:
The Departed is a remake of the Hong Kong trilogy Infernal Affairs. The titles are Infernal Affairs, Infernal Affairs 2 (prequel to 1st), and Infernal Affairs 3 (sequel to 1st). The first one has been available for a few years now in the US, but the other 2 weren't until The Departed came out on dvd. You can now get all 3 films in an Infernal Affairs box set. About 90% of The Departed comes from Infernal Affairs, the rest of it is details taken from the other two to add more to the storyline and ending. |

| I loved The Departed, so after I saw if I rented Infernal Affairs and I agree with draco2030 that a lot of the plot from Infernal Affairs was used in The Departed. But, Hollywood has trouble coming up with original ideas so they remake foreign films. When they do it well, they make something like The Birdcage, but when they do it badly, it is horrible. I saw a foreign (I think Norwegian) film called The Vanishing that I thought had a very stupid plot. A man and his girlfriend are on the road. She disappears and he never sees her again, but he obsesses about what happened to her through the whole movie. I mean I thought it was pretty obvious that she was dead. He finds out who kidnapped her and wants to know what happened to her. The kidnapper tells him the only way he will find out is to experience everything she did and he agreed. That was like saying "Please kill me." It was ridiculous. But, then I discovered it was remade in the US with the same name as the foreign film The Vanishing. Sorry, I got a little sidetracked there. But, if anyone else has seen it, let me know what you think. |
